History
The rapid expansion of capital building in the country- side in the late 1950 ps caused the lack of architects specializing in rural design. The architectural higher educational establishments did not train specialists for rural purposes then. The early ideas on foundation of hulling and architectural faculties at architectural institutes were first implemented in Ukraine in 1961. The given initiative was supported by the Board of Lviv Branch of the Union of Architects of Ukraine and Lviv Regional Board of Building and Architecture. As a result , in 1965 the Department of Architecture was opened at Lviv Agricultural Institute for 25 fresh comers.
Within 1965-1969 future architects were trained on the basis of the Department of Planning and Building of Rural Settlements (headed by the associate professor Yu. Solomin). Another architecturally specialized unit - the Department of Agricultural Architecture ( headed by the associate professor S. Sokolov ) – was founded in 1970.
In 1983 the Department of Planning and Building of Rural Settlements was renamed as the Department of Building and Architecture of Rural Settlements. The position of the ture of Rural Settlements. The position of the Department’s head was occupied by A. Mann, V. Barabash, H. Loyik, A.Stepanyuk and I. Chernyak.
Sice 1999 the Department has been headed by the Professor, Merited Artist of Ukraine S.M. Servetnyk.

Education
Since its foundation the Department qualified about 800 architects who are now working successfully in different parts of Ukraine and abroad, occupying the positions of leading experts, scholars and managers in the field of architecture and design.
Research
The Department conducts its research activities in three directions:
1. Architectural and planning reconstruction of rural settlements under the present conditions.
2. Problems of reconstruction of agribusiness infrastructure at agricultural ventures.
3. Historic and theoretic basics of the development of architectural and planning structure of rural settlements.
Within the last period the Department participated in various international forums , conferences and architectural exhibitions (Dublyany, Lviv, Kyiv, Warsaw, ect).
International Cooperation
The Department keeps contacts with homogenious foreign higher schools in Canada, the USA, the U.K., ect.
